BEIRUT
A group of Lebanese lawyers will be filing a lawsuit for the arrest and prosecution of Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, who is recuperating from an open heart surgery in Beirut, on charges of killing Lebanese nationals, one of the lawyer said Sunday.
"The lawsuit will be filed on Monday by a group of 13 Lebanese lawyers to ask for the arrest of the Syrian minister on charges of killing Lebanese nationals," Tareq Shandab told Anadolu Agency.
He cited fatalities in recent Syrian rocket barrages on the eastern Lebanese town of Arsal, which is currently home to thousands of Syrian refugees.
Shandab asserted that no diplomatic immunity should be given to al-Moallam, noting that the Arab League has already stripped the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad from its membership in the pan-Arab body.
Al-Moallem was admitted to a Beirut hospital late Thursday and had an open-heart surgery a day later, a Lebanese medical source had told AA on Friday.
The top Syrian diplomat is currently hospitalized at the American University of Beirut (AUB)'s medical center, where he had the surgery.
Lebanese media also reported that Syrian Ambassador in Beirut Ali Abdelkraim and Lebanese Finance Minister Ali Hassan had both visited al-Moallem in hospital.
