TUNIS
Iran's Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said that Iran supported Syrian people's demand for liberty.
Talking to reporters after a conference in capital Tunis on Thursday, Salehi said that Iran were backing whole Arab reforms.
Iran was backing people's demand for freedom in Syria, he said, adding however, it was a complicated situation.
Salehi said they were against any military intervention in Syria. "We expect a gradual change in Syria. A chance should be given to President Assad to keep his promises," added Salehi.
Iran backed popular uprisings that removed leaders in Egypt ad Libya but has supported Syrian administration's violent approach to its own people.
Salehi earlier had said that "any hasty approach to the Syrian issue and the creation of a power vacuum in that country could have very damaging consequences for the region."
Syria has been the scene of unrest since mid-March, 2011, with demonstrations being held against President Bashar al-Assad's government. The West and the Syrian opposition groups accuse Assad of killing demonstrators.
