According to presidential spokesman Ihab Badawy, the move comes against the backdrop of Egypt's current security situation.
In a statement, Badawy added that Egypt's interim cabinet had approved the decision.
The statement, however, failed to mention the night-time curfew imposed by the government on August 14, when it violently dispersed two anti-coup sit-ins.
The government is expected to clarify the fate of the curfew in a later statement.
Egypt has been in the throes of political violence since the July 3 ouster of Morsi – the country's first democratically elected president – by Egypt's powerful military.
Last week, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim survived an apparent attempt on his life. In the days that followed, authorities claimed to have defused several bombs in different areas of the country.
