KIEV
Opposition groups in ongoing anti-government protests in Ukraine's capital Kiev have established a nationwide political movement under the name 'People's Union Square'.
Nearly 100,000 people took part in the ongoing anti-government protests in the centre of the Ukrainian capital on Sunday to demand the ouster of the president and his Cabinet.
Former Interior Minister Yuri Lutsenko, who was pardoned by President Viktor Yanukovych, UDAR (Punch) Patrty leader Vitali Klitschko and Svoboda (Freedom) Party leader Oleg Tyagnibok delivered speeches on Sunday during the protests.
“Members of the opposition have established a movement called the 'People’s Union Square',” announced Oleg Tyagnibok.
Everyone who comes to demonstrate in the Independence Square should sign up to this movement, he said.
“Here we are in Kiev all together. We are struggling together. We are standing together and we will block the government buildings and because of us the government will not be able to sleep,” stated Tyagnibok.
Former Interior Minister Lutsenko called on the people to continue demonstrating. “The number of members in the “People’s Union Square” movement should reach 10 million,” he said.
Mass anti-government protests began after Ukranian President Yanukovych’s decision to walk away from an agreement on free trade and political association with the EU and turn to Russia. The protests have now entered their second month, and since they began traffic has been closed in Kiev’s Independence Square and Kreschatik Street.
