8 Iraqis killed, 11 injured in Baqubah mortar shelling

DIYALA

Eight Iraqis were killed and 11 others injured on Saturday in a mortar shelling of a village in northeastern Baqubah, the capital of the northern province of Diyala, a medical source said.

Unidentified people fired mortar shells into the Mulla Jawad village on the road between Baqubah and Muqdadiyah, killing eight people, including six from the same family.

Women and children were among those injured in the attack, the source said.

Security forces cordoned off the village, while ambulances took the victims to the Baqubah General Hospital.

Recent months have witnessed an uptick in violence across Iraq. Although most such attacks go unclaimed, Iraqi authorities usually point the finger at Al-Qaeda-linked militants.
