BENGHAZI
At least six Libyan students were injured on Wednesday when an explosion went off at their school in the eastern city of Benghazi, security and medical officials said.
"An explosion hit the Mahd al-Marefa School in Benghazi's Al-Fawihat district, leaving some students injured," Ibrahim al-Sharaa, a spokesman for the Benghazi Joint Security Room, told Anadolu Agency.
Initial investigations had revealed that a disgruntled student who had been expelled earlier was behind the bombing, al-Sharaa said without elaborating.
Fadia al-Barghathi, spokesperson for the Al-Galaa Hospital, said the hospital had received a number of students suffering moderate injuries. She added that she expected the number of injuries to rise further.
Libyan officials could not be reached for comment.
Libyans are still struggling to restore order to their country more than two years after the death of long-serving strongman Muammar Gaddafi.
The transitional government and its security forces have worked hard to contain militancy on the streets, which ran rampant with the armed militias that helped overthrow Gaddafi but which held onto their weapons after the 2011 uprising.
