TRENTON, Canada

Representatives for G7 countries gathered Friday in Canada to discuss ways to minimize threats like the exploitation of children, as they acknowledged the world is fraught with dangers.

“Together we will discuss the challenges we all face in improving the safety and security of the people we serve in an ever-more complex and dangerous world,” Gary Anandasangaree, Canada’s minister of public safety, said in a statement leading up to the gathering.

Canada is hosting the G7 Interior and Security Ministers’ meeting in the national capital of Ottawa, with representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US, as well as the EU.

The ambitious agenda lists the threats facing citizens in countries, including organized crime, drug use, migrant smuggling, terrorist and violent content online, cybercrime and national security, and child sexual abuse.

“The meeting focuses on enhancing international collaboration to address global security threats … that affect the safety of their communities and security of their nations,” according to a statement from the Public Safety Canada Ministry.

The agenda also lists “building energy security.”

The G7 Interior and Security is an annual event that “focuses on enhancing international collaboration to address global security threats,” the release said.

Canada is the host country for the meeting and the public safety department’s agenda is in line with the goals of the G7 ministers.

“On the G7’s 50th anniversary, Canada’s agenda is focused on protecting our communities and the world; building energy security and accelerating the digital transition; and securing the partnerships of the future,” said the statement.

The meeting concludes Nov. 23.
