KAHRAMANMARAS, Türkiye

Three brothers, who have bread production facilities in Azerbaijan, Iran, and Ukraine, are distributing free bread to victims in southern Türkiye after powerful earthquakes shook the region last month.

Hasan, 51, Servet, 48, and Emrah Akkus, 45, lent a helping hand to their fellow countrymen in Kahramanmaras province in the wake of the Feb. 6 tremors.

Returning to their hometown on the third day of the disaster, the brothers started to bake bread with limited means on wood fire in an oven they used to work in before moving abroad.

"What will I be if I'm not with my people on a day like this. People need bread, water, food and help," Hasan told Anadolu.

"I am working to make people happy even a little bit. We were able to produce 20 to 25,000 breads in wood fire in the first week. Afterwards, with the resumption of natural gas transfer thanks to the support of our state, we will produce between 40 to 42,000 breads per day,” Hasan said.

“Today is the time for unity, time to be one heart. This is the time when we will get through this pain by sharing it together,” he added.

More than 46,100 people were killed in Türkiye by earthquakes that struck on Feb. 6, according to officials.

The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 quakes, centered in Kahramanmaras, rocked 11 provinces, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, Elazig, and Sanliurfa.

Around 13.5 million people in Türkiye have been affected, as well as many others in northwestern Syria.
