All of the dailies covered Germany's position on opening of 22nd chapter in Turkey's EU accession negotiations, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's phone conversation with US President Barack Obama, Erdogan's remarks at Ankara Police Academy about the role of the police in the Gezi Park, 7th BDP delegation's visit to Imrali, and US Ambassador to Turkey Francis Ricciardone's tour of southeastern provinces.
Daily SABAH headlined "Turkey-Europe war of tactics", publishing that the European Union (EU) came up with two solutions to the chapter crisis occurred as Germany resisted opening of a new chapter in Turkey's EU accession process, which were either to open the chapter but to start negotiations after 5 months or to open the chapter but to release a harsh statement condemning police's excessive use of force in the Gezi Park protests. It added that Turkey did not accept both, while Minister of EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis would brief the EU ambassadors about Gezi Park events on Tuesday. Daily TURKIYE headlined "Reaction to Merkel from EU" and published that German Chancellor Angela Merkel, aiming to invest in the upcoming federal elections, was criticized by both EU and German public. Daily STAR headlined "Think of Europe, do not behave whimsically", referring to reactions from Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, who advised Merkel to behave strategically about Turkey's accession, and his German counterpart Guido Westerwelle who criticized Merkel and said, "Interrupting dialogue with Turkey is a serious threat".
Erdogan's phone conversation with Obama
Daily MILLIYET headlined "(Erdogan) explained 'Gezi' to Obama", and published that during one-hour-long phone call, the two leaders discussed Gezi Park events and Syria issue. Daily SABAH published that the messages came out of the conversation were as follows: "We will continue cooperating to support Syrian opposition and struggle with terrorism, and freedom of expression and gathering are our shared values" Daily YENI SAFAK titled "Surprise phone call" and quoted Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc as saying "The conversation was very successful".
Erdogan's defense of Turkish police at police academy
Daily MILLIYET titled "Police showed heroism", quoting Erdogan as speaking at Police Academy's graduation ceremony in Ankara. It published that Erdogan defended the police by saying that the police showed heroism by working for 48 hours without food and water in full discipline. Daily SABAH titled "Both democracy and security", referring to Erdogan's words: "We sensibly preserved the freedom-security balance". Daily AKSAM headlined "Police showed heroism", and published that Erdogan once again defended the police and quoted him as saying "They succesfully done their job, even showed heroism".
7th visit of BDP delegation to Imrali
Daily MILLIYET titled "MIT (national intelligence organization) stepped in, Ocalan was convinced", referring to the crisis occurred as Sirri Sureyya Onder from Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) was vetoed from being in the 7th delegation to visit jailed terrorist PKK head Abdullah Ocalan by the government, and solved as the intelligence convinced Ocalan to accept the delegation to be composed of only from BDP leaders Selahattin Demirtas and and Pervin Buldan. Daily SABAH published that the intelligence visited Imrali before the delegation so as to convince Ocalan, and added that BDP would issue a declaration regarding the visit later on Tuesday. Daily AKSAM published that the delegation briefed Ocalan on their latest talk with the government, as Onder was not among the delegation, allegedly because of his active role in the Gezi Park protests.
US ambassador's southeast trip
Some dailies also covered US Ambassador to Turkey Francis Ricciardone's tour of southeastern provinces of Turkey. Daily MILLIYET titled "US ambassador in Hakkari after 33 years" and published that Ricciardone has reiterated American support to solution process during his visit in Hakkari. Daily AKSAM published that Ricciardone said he had had knowledge about the area as he had served at Adana Consulate-General in 1980s, as well as nice memories. Daily VATAN published that Ricciardone's vehicle broke down on the way from Van to Hakkari, and Ricciardone photographed the repairman while fixing the car.
