Turkish dailies on Thursday mainly covered remarks of Turkish Premier Erdogan on Turkey's role in an international military action on Syria, United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee passing the resolution on Syria and the defeat of Turkey by Finland in Euro Basket 2013.
- Turkey ready for all options on Syria
All the dailies covered the remarks of Turkish Premier Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Turkey's role in an international military action on Syria, before departing for G-20 Summit in Russia's St. Petersburg.
Daily YENISAFAK headlined "We are ready for all options," stressing that the condition for coalition will determine Turkey's position in the operation.
Daily TURKIYE quoted Erdogan as asking "We are ready, what about you?" as a stake to the threat of Damascus regime to hit Turkey if it engages with an international operation on Syria. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had said "A possible operation on Syria will harm, burn the whole region, leading to a regional war" and Turkish Premier reacted on Wednesday as "Don't trust too much".
Daily SABAH titled "We're all for any coalition in Syria," in which Erdogan argued that Turkey is ready to take part in any kind of coalition in Syria, which he preferred to call "a coalition of volunteers."
- Green light from US Senate to Obama -
Most of the Turkish dailies covered on Thursday US Senate Foreign Relations Committee passing the resolution on Syria that paved the way, as the first step before the Congress makes the final ruling, for Washington to engage in a military intervention in the war-torn country upon the recent use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime.
Daily YENISAFAK wrote "Green light from US Senate to Obama" and said the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the resolution, with some restrictions, by 10 to 7 votes and permitted a 60+30 days of operation on Syria.
Daily BUGUN published "Operation to last 90 days max." to note that the parties in the US Congress agreed on a 60-day operation on Syria that Obama has been given authorization to extend to 90 days, adding that the "US will have no boots on the ground in Syria," which US Secretary of State John Kerry resulted upon US Senate discussion on Syria.
Daily STAR headlined "Obama resolute, says asking the Congress 'symbolic'", citing Obama's words that "I do not believe that I was required to take this to Congress, but I did not take this to Congress just because it's an empty exercise. I think it's important to have Congress' support on it."
Daily AKSAM wrote "If we don't intervene, Assad kills again," quoting Obama saying "I believe that Congress will approve it. I think America recognizes that if the international community fails to maintain certain norms, standards, laws governing how countries interact and how people are treated, that over time, this world becomes less safe. It becomes more dangerous not only for those people who are subjected to these horrible crimes, but to all of humanity."
- Defeat of Turkish National Basketball Team by Finland -
Daily TURKIYE titled "Fin impact on Giants" to say that "12 Giant Men" lost 55-61 to Finland at its first game in the European Basketball Championships 2013 in Slovenia.
Daily MILLIYET said "Disappointment of the Giants" and described the offense of the Turkish team as "terrible" in its first match with the Fin national team on Wednesday in the Euro Championship which it began in the hope of claiming medal.
