ANKARA
Turkey’s Constitutional Court dismissed an appeal filed by Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy Mehmet Haberal, which claims his rights were infringed after the court’s decision to put an international travel ban on him.
Haberal, a surgeon and founder of a university in Ankara, received a sentence of 12 years, 6 months in prison for plotting to overthrow the elected government during the 'Ergenekon trial', but was released early on health grounds.
The Constitutional Court tribunal that oversaw the case decided to dismiss the appeal on the grounds that a regional court previously ruled on the continuation of the ban.
Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court has also decided to look into the individual appeals of Fatih Hilmioglu, who was also convicted in the Ergenekon case before being released due to his health condition, and Abdullah Ocalan, former leader of terrorist organization PKK, at a later time.
