Turkey supports drought-stricken African nations with deep drilling projects which provide drinking water to communities across the continent.
The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), a state-funded organization providing development projects and humanitarian relief to foreign countries, allocated 303 deep drilling projects across Africa including Niger, Ethiopia, Sudan, Burkina Faso, Mali, Somalia and west Africa. In Somalia alone, TIKA helped nearly 126 thousand Somalis obtain drinking water in cooperation with other Turkish institutions.
African nations, which face famine and drought regularly, receive international donations but still struggle to sustain their societies, especially local indigenous communities, due to the lack of infrastructure and know-how. Turkey increased its donation and coordination in line with its renewed efforts to increase relations with African nations over a decade through institutions like TIKA.
At least one billion people around the world have no access to drinking water, according to the UN,
With its eight offices in Africa, TIKA supports communities and brings humanitarian solutions to regional problems via direct involvement and cooperation at the national level.
