ANKARA (AA) - July 20, 2012 - Turkey has expressed its disappointment over Russia's and China's vetoing a UN draft resolution on the situation in Syria once again.
"At a time when the situation in Syria is acquiring more tragic dimension each day, it is disappointing that the UNSMIS draft resolution which was on the agenda of the UN Security Council did not pass with two votes against versus eleven votes in favour and two abstentions and the fact that a draft resolution on Syria was vetoed for the third time," the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a written statement on Friday.
"Unfortunately, the Security Council was not able to fulfill its responsibility yet again on an issue which threatens international peace and security," the statement noted.
The ministry said that Turkey wished the Security Council would redress such mistake and a legitimate administration at peace with its own people could be established in Syria as soon as possible.
"As long as this is not achieved, it would not be possible to re-establish peace and security in Syria and in the region. Syria stands at a historic turning point. The international community should stand side by side with the people of Syria at this critical juncture and ensure that steps enabling an orderly transition in line with the flow of history are resolutely taken," the statement said.
