An Egyptian court on Wednesday sentenced ousted president Hosni Mubarak to three years in jail for corruption, judicial sources have said.

Mubarak's two sons, Alaa and Gamal, were each slapped with four-year jail terms on the same charges.

The three were ordered to pay a total of 21 million Egyptian pounds (roughly $3 million) to the state and fined a total of 125.7 million Egyptian pounds (around $18 million).

The ruling is not final, however, and can still be appealed, the source said.

They were the first jail sentences to be handed down to Mubarak's sons since the 2011 uprising that ended their father's 30-year rule.

A legal source said Mubarak would be transferred from a military hospital – where he has been staying since his release in August – to prison to serve out his term, from which a temporary detention period (around 24 months) will be deducted.

It is yet to be known where Mubarak will serve out the jail term.

Mubarak and his two sons were accused of intentionally squandering public funds and fabricating official documents.

In late 2012, Mubarak and his interior minister, Habib al-Adly, were each sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing demonstrators during the 18-day uprising in 2011.

But another court later ordered a retrial after the ousted president's lawyers successfully appealed the sentence.
