Preldzic's three-point shot in the final seconds of the game propels Turkey to victory against Australia, 65-64, to advance to quarterfinals.

World Cup basketball: Turkey narrowly defeat Australia

BARCELONA, Spain 

Turkey eliminated Australia in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup 65-64 on Sunday night in Barcelona.

Following a brave effort throughout the game, Turkey snatched the victory against Australia thanks to shooting guard Emir Preldzic's three-point shot with 5 seconds left.

Turkish guards Preldzic and Sinan Guler's 16 points each were instrumental in securing the win. Point guard Ender Arslan added 11 points.

Australian center Aron Baynes scored 15 points, his teammate Matthew Dellavedova had 13. His teammate Joe Ingles - who plays for latest Turkish Airlines Euroleague winners Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv - added 10 points.

Australia missed 9 free throws out of 19 while Turkey only missed four out of 14. 

Throughout the game, the officials' controversial decisions infuriated both sides.

Turkey will face Lithuania on Tuesday in the quarterfinals in Barcelona. Tip-off is at 1500GMT.
