ANKARA
USM Alger from Algeria won the 2023 CAF Confederation Cup by defeating Tanzanian club Young Africans on 2-2 aggregate Saturday on a technicality.
Despite Congolese Djuma Shabani netting the winning goal for the Young Africans on a penalty kick in the seventh minute in the second-leg match at Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers, Alger triumphed because of the away goals rule -- a tie-breaking method.
USM Alger claimed their maiden trophy in the competition.
The CAF Confederation Cup is an annual association football club competition established in 2004 on a merger of the CAF Cup and the African Cup Winners' Cup and organized by CAF.
The most successful team in the competition is Club Sportif Sfaxien from Tunisia with three titles.
