Former Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane was on Monday appointed head coach of Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.

"We announce the successor to Dutchman Pascal Jansen to lead our 35-time champion and 24-time cup winner team, as the 146-time national team player of the Republic of Ireland Robbie Keane has signed on Monday," the club said in a statement.

The 44-year-old arrived in Budapest on Sunday evening to conclude contract negotiations. He will leave for Spain on Tuesday to join the training camp.

Keane made his coaching debut in 2018 as the player-manager of ATK before joining the Republic of Ireland national team, Middlesbrough and Leeds United, respectively.

Then, he served as a manager of Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv, lifting the Israeli Premier League title and league cup in the 2023-2024 season. He also advanced to the last 16 of the Europa Conference League with Maccabi.

During his playing career, Keane made appearances for Inter Milan in Italy and some English Premier League clubs such as Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, West Ham United, and Aston Villa.

Ferencvaros are currently second in the Hungarian top-division standings and 16th in the Europa League table.
