The German football club Schalke 04 ended its partnership with Russian natural gas company Gazprom prematurely following Russia's war on Ukraine.

"The FC Schalke 04 managing board and supervisory board have come to the agreement to end the club’s partnership with GAZPROM prematurely. The club is currently in discussions with representatives of the current sponsor and further information will be released at a later date," the Bundesliga 2 side said on Monday.

On Feb. 24, Schalke 04 removed the Gazprom logo off their shirts in protest of Russia's war on Ukraine.

Russia’s war on Ukraine has entered its fifth day after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered it last Thursday, days after recognizing two separatist-held enclaves in eastern Ukraine.

The international community reacted angrily to the war, with the EU, UK, and US imposing a slew of economic sanctions on Russia.

Russia has been further isolated after its planes have been barred from flying in European and Canadian airspace, and a number of its banks have been kicked out of the SWIFT international banking system.
