SARAJEVO (AA) – Vlade Divac, one of the initiators of the regional cooperation between Olympic committees, visited Sarajevo on the occasion of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Olympic Committee of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Divac promoted this initiative, saying that it can be a model of cooperation for other regions. The European Olympic committee already offered its support for the initiative, describing it as a role model for other regions.
“I believe we showed that we have mutual interests, goals, and that we truly believe sports can join people,” Divac said.
Divac followed the Eurobasket championship in Slovenia, concluding that many good teams as well as players came from the Balkans. However, he noted they do not have enough representatives in the NBA.
He expressed his belief that Bosnian Mirza Taletovic, who plays in the NBA, has great potential.
"He has quality, but he does not play enough with Brooklyn. Maybe he should consider to change the team in order to play more. During the Eurobasket, he showed what he can do. He is an extraordinarily talented player, and I am very sorry the Bosnian national team did not have a chance to play more,“ Divac said.
Since his return to Serbia, Divac has engaged himself in humanitarian work and established, together with his wife Ana, a foundation to help the children of refugees and displaced people in Serbia.
"Our intention was to try to help to all these people who were not so lucky in starting a new life. However, in our work we concentrated only on Serbia because we believe we have to finish this process. When we are finished with the job in Serbia, we will probably broaden our work. I hope we will find similar organisations in the region to work together on this very important issue," Divac concluded.
