ANKARA
Chelsea star Didier Drogba congratulated the “lion hearted fans” of his former team, Turkish side Galatasaray on their 20th title in Turkish top division Spor Toto Super League.
"I congratulate the lion hearted fans and lion hearted friends of mine", Drogba said in a Twitter post Monday night after the Lions declared their championship following the runners-up Fenerbahce’s draw against Basaksehir, which effectively ended their quest for the top spot with one game to go in the season.
Aside from Chelsea's Ivorian veteran striker Drogba, Mallorca's Spanish midfielder Albert Riera and Inter manager Roberto Mancini also hailed their former club's success.
Riera wrote on Twitter, "Congratulations. I am with you with all my heart", while ex-manager Mancini said, "Galatasaray are the champions of the Turkish Super Lig and becomes first team to get fourth star! Congratulations!"
Meanwhile, on Monday Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent a telegram to congratulate the team, and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu congratulated the Lions’ victory on Twitter.
Winning the domestic league title for 20 times, Galatasaray is the first Turkish football club to acquire the fourth star above their crest. In Turkish football, a club receives one star for five league titles.
Archrivals Fenerbahce have three and Besiktas have two stars above their logos.
