One of European football's past legends, Real Madrid's honorary president Alfredo Di Stefano passed away at the age of 88

MADRID 

Spanish club Real Madrid's honorary president Alfredo Di Stefano died at the age of 88, in Gregorio Maranon hospital in Madrid, on Monday.

Officials of the hospital announced that the Real Madrid legend had passed away after spending the last 45 hours in a coma, due to a heart attack.

Argentine-Spanish Di Stefano had been taken to hospital after suffering a heart attack on Saturday.

“Real Madrid C. F. extends (..) condolences to Madrid fans around the world and anyone who feels moved by the loss of the greatest player of all time,” said the Spanish club on its website.  

Di Stefano scored 308 goals in 396 games making him Real Madrid’s second highest goal-scorer.

Di Stefano, who also coached the team for three seasons in the 1980s and 1990s, was made the Spanish club's honorary president in 2000.
