Chelsea, Wolfsburg join Arsenal, Barcelona in UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinals

England's Chelsea and Germany's Wolfsburg advanced to the 2022-23 UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinals Thursday to join Arsenal and Barcelona.

In a quarterfinal second leg, London's Chelsea Women beat their French opponents Olympique Lyon Feminin 4-3 in a penalty shootout at Stamford Bridge.

Vanessa Gilles scored a second-half goal for Lyon as the visitors won 1-0 in regular time to level on aggregate. Sara Dabritz scored to double the gap for Lyon in the 110th minute. The visitors took the aggregate lead with Dabritz's goal.

Near the end of the extra time, Chelsea were awarded a penalty after a video assistant referee (VAR) review and the home team's Maren Mjelde converted it successfully to take the match to a penalty shootout which decided the winning team.

Chelsea won 4-3 on penalties to be in the next stage.

The London club's goalkeeper, Ann-Katrin Berger, saved two penalties to send defending champions Lyon home.

Earlier Thursday, Wolfsburg booked their place in the semifinals.

The German club won the tie 2-1 even though they drew with Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 at Volkswagen Arena.

Chelsea will play against Spanish side Barcelona and Wolfsburg will take on London team Arsenal in the semis.

The Women's Champions League semifinals will be held on April 22-23 and April 29-30.

Eindhoven's Philips Stadium, the home of Dutch club PSV, will stage this season's Champions League final on June 3.
