Cercle Brugge goalkeeper Miguel Van Damme died of leukemia at the age of 28, the Belgian club announced on Tuesday.
Van Damme lost his long battle with cancer, after it returned for a third time.
"Our thoughts go, first of all to his wife Kyana, his daughter Camille, the parents of Miguel, his sister Francesca, and also to his many friends and family," the club said in an online statement.
It added: "Miguel, your perseverance and strength to go for it (again) over and over, setback after setback, was admirable. You are an example of positivity, persistence and fighting spirit, a source of inspiration for everyone who faces challenges. You are forever in our green-black hearts, our #16."
Van Damme played for Cercle Brugge since 2014, when he was promoted from U21 team.
He played 33 games for the Belgian club in the 1B Pro League, the Belgian Second Division.
