US Open: Djokovic, Williams sail into 3rd round

Top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament on Wednesday.

In the men's category, the reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion and world number one Novak Djokovic defeated Andrea Haider-Maurer of Austria in three tidy sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.

Seventh seed David Ferrer of Spain, who has been suffering from an elbow injury since his quarterfinal appearance at the French Open, beat Serbia's Filip Krajinovic, 7-5, 7-5, 7-6

Defending champion Marin Cilic and the Spaniard Rafael Nadal also advanced to the third round with comfortable wins against their opponents.

The number one Turkish player in the tournament Marsel Ilhan, who is ranked 83rd in the world, exited the tournament in the second round after losing to Benoit Paire of France 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 3-6.

In women's game, top seed Serena Williams faced a surprising challenge in her 7-6, 6-3 win over Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands.

Her sister, the 23rd seed Venus Williams, also advanced after defeating her compatriot Irina Falconi 6-3, 6-7, 6-2.

The biggest upset of the day occured when top-seeded doubles Bob and Mike Bryan were defeated by fellow Americans Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 in the first round game.

The loss means the identical twins will finish a grand slam season title-less for the first time since 2004.
