Ukrainian leader highlights Germany’s patronage of Chernihiv region, praises air defense efforts

ISTANBUL
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday he met German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to discuss cooperation and thanked Berlin for its defense aid and humanitarian support, particularly in the Chernihiv region.
Zelenskyy welcomed Germany’s “European leadership” in military support and air defense deliveries in a statement on X, writing that the efforts have directly contributed to saving lives amid war.
The Ukrainian president also underscored the importance of Germany’s regional involvement.
“The patronage of the President of Germany over the Chernihiv region is particularly significant. Thanks to this support, four shelters are already being equipped in communities across the region,” he wrote. “I am grateful for all forms of assistance. We value Germany’s readiness to continue supporting our people.”
Zelenskyy held a meeting earlier with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin.
He announced that Ukraine and Germany reached new agreements on joint defense production, including investments in weapons manufacturing and drone systems.
Zelenskyy's visit is part of diplomatic efforts to maintain international support amid the conflict with Russia.
