ISTANBUL

At least 14 people were injured in the Russian Republic of Chuvashia due to a Ukrainian drone attack, local authorities said on Tuesday.

“According to operational data as of 11 am (0800GMT), the number of victims of today's drone attack in Cheboksary has risen to 14, including one child,” Vladimir Stepanov, the region’s deputy head, said in a statement on Telegram.

Stepanov said emergency services are working on site, adding that all of those affected by the attack are receiving the necessary medical care.

Separately, Chuvashia Governor Oleg Nikolayev reported damage to residential buildings and that temporary traffic restrictions have been imposed in the port city, situated on the Volga River.

“All necessary assistance is being provided to residents, and all damaged residential buildings will be restored,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its air defenses shot down 121 drones launched by Ukraine overnight. While none were intercepted over Chuvashia, the statement said four drones were shot down over the neighboring Nizhny Novgorod region.

Ukrainian authorities did not immediately comment on the attack, though its Air Force claimed air defenses shot down 84 out of 110 various types of drones launched by Russia overnight.

In the country’s northeastern Sumy region, Governor Oleh Hryhorov said the attack targeted energy infrastructure, leaving part of the region bordering Russia without power supply.

Ukraine's State Emergency Service also reported damages to infrastructure in the Zaporizhzhia and Chernihiv regions, the latter of which borders Sumy.
