Ukraine said on Monday that at least seven people were killed and 22 others injured in an overnight Russian airstrike on the country’s capital Kyiv.

“Twenty-two people were injured in the enemy's night attack on the capital. Currently, 12 of them are in city hospitals. The rest were treated by doctors on the spot. At this time, six people have been confirmed dead,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram.

He said that the strike resulted in extensive damage to a five-story building in the capital’s Shevchenkivskyi district, adding that search and rescue work at the scene is ongoing.

Klitschko further said that the blast wave also damaged apartments in a 25-story residential building nearby.

He went on to note that damage to non-residential premises and private residential buildings were also recorded in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Podilskyi, and Holosiivskyi districts.

“After the strikes on Iran's nuclear program facilities, there was a lot of uproar from Moscow — the Russian leadership performatively condemned the ‘missile-and-bomb’ actions.

“Today, Moscow is silent after the Russian army carried out a completely cynical strike using Russian-Iranian Shahed drones and missiles against civilian infrastructure in Kyiv and other cities and communities of ours,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X following the attack.

Noting that a person was also killed in the city of Bila Tserkva in the surrounding Kyiv region after a drone struck a hospital, Zelenskyy claimed that preliminary reports indicate ballistic weapons from North Korea were also used in the attack on the capital.

Ukraine’s Air Force claimed on Telegram that the country’s air defenses shot down 146 out of 352 drones launched by Russia, as well as 12 out of 16 missiles fired during the overnight attack.

"The main direction of the attack is the city of Kyiv!" it added.

Russian authorities have not immediately commented on Ukraine’s claims.
