A Russian airstrike on a school in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region "most likely" killed 60 people, the local governor said on Sunday.

The airstrike on Saturday caused a fire inside the school in the Belogorovka village, which was put out in almost four hours, Serhiy Haidai, the governor of the Luhansk region, said on Telegram.

"30 people were evacuated from the rubble, seven of whom were injured. Most likely, all 60 people who remained under the rubble of buildings died," he stated.

"These are the real atrocities of the Russian world,” he said.

In another post on the matter, Haidai said rescuers could not work at night due to the threat of new shelling, and that the rescue operations continued on Sunday.

The governor said another two-story building in the neighboring Shipilovo village was destroyed at night, with 11 people hiding in the basement.

"There are chances for salvation," he added.
