KIRKUK, Iraq
U.S.-led international coalition airstrikes on Saturday killed 86 ISIL militants in the Hawija district of Kirkuk city, northern Iraq, according to a police source.
“The international coalition has bombed buildings where the militants were hiding and managed to kill 86 ISIL militants,” Hawija police chief Kazim Mohamed told an Anadolu Agency correspondent.
“A lot of government buildings were damaged as ISIL militants had been using the Hawija county administrative building as their headquarters, in addition to other governmental buildings,” Mohammed added.
Iraq has been in a security vacuum since June, when ISIL overran Mosul and declared what it calls a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria.
The U.S. is leading an international coalition that has carried out numerous airstrikes against ISIL in Iraq and Syria.
