The Speaker of Yemen's House of Representatives, Yahya al-Raie, called late on Thursday for holding a joint meeting of the two chambers of parliament to discuss the ramifications of the resignation of Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi.
According to a statement published on the website of the General People's Congress Party – the party of both the house speaker and the Yemeni President – the meeting will focus on the resignation Hadi submitted to parliament earlier on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, the Yemeni President submitted his resignation to parliament, a short time after his government submitted its resignation.
Soon after these resignations were submitted, some Shiite Houthi leaders talked about plans by their movement to form a presidential council to rule Yemen in the months to come.
Yemen has remained in a state of relative lawlessness since a popular uprising that erupted in 2011 forced autocratic President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down one year later.
