WASHINGTON
The U.S. and coalition partners continued to pound ISIL forces in Iraq and Syria, with eight of thirteen airstrikes hitting the group in a contested border town in Syria, according to U.S. Central Command.
Eight air strikes near Kobani, also known as Ayn al-Arab, destroyed five ISIL armed vehicles, a supply depot, a command and control compound, a logistics compound, and eight ISIL-occupied barracks. Another barrack was damaged.
An airstrike south of ISIL’s self-declared capital of Raqqa destroyed four ISIL armed vehicles and damaged two others.
Jordan participated in the strikes
ISIL is currently trying to wrest control of Kobani from outmatched Kurdish forces.
Seizing the city would be a strategic victory for the militants, essentially linking its self-declared capital in Raqqa with the Turkish border and the contested city of Aleppo.
The U.S. launched six airstrikes in the past 24 hours on the militants near Kobani, bringing the total there to 14 since Tuesday.
In Iraq, an airstrike northwest of Ramadi destroyed an ISIL checkpoint, an airstrike in Iraq’s second largest city, Mosul, destroyed four ISIL vehicles and damaged two others. A third strike south of Kirkuk destroyed two ISIL fighting positions.
