United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for action to protect human rights of migrants after two boats capsized a week apart off coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa, killing more than 338 migrants.
Ban said he was deeply saddened by the reports of the loss of lives as a boat carrying migrants capsized on Friday off the coast of Italy killing at least 27 only a week after a similar tragic incident near the Italian island of Lampedusa claimed at least than 311 lives.
He called on "the international community as a whole to take action to prevent such tragedies in the future, including measures that address their root causes and that places the vulnerability and human rights of migrants at the centre of the response."
