Ukraine said on Monday that at least 10 people were killed and over 40 others injured in an overnight Russian airstrike on the country’s capital Kyiv.

"Rescuers have unblocked the body of the ninth victim of the enemy strike. The search operation is ongoing," Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, said in a statement on Telegram.

Tkachenko further said that, as of 2.30 p.m. local time (1130GMT), authorities have recorded the number of injured to be 33, with 25 located in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district.

Earlier, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that the overnight strike resulted in extensive damage to a five-story building in the district.

Klitschko further said the blast wave also damaged apartments in a 25-story residential building nearby.

He went on to note that damage to non-residential premises and private residential buildings were also recorded in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Podilskyi, and Holosiivskyi districts.

“After the strikes on Iran's nuclear program facilities, there was a lot of uproar from Moscow — the Russian leadership performatively condemned the ‘missile-and-bomb’ actions.

“Today, Moscow is silent after the Russian army carried out a completely cynical strike using Russian-Iranian Shahed drones and missiles against civilian infrastructure in Kyiv and other cities and communities of ours,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X following the attack.

Noting that a person was also killed in the city of Bila Tserkva in the surrounding Kyiv region after a drone struck a hospital, Zelenskyy claimed that preliminary reports indicate ballistic weapons from North Korea were also used in the attack on the capital.

Acting Kyiv Governor Mykola Kalashnyk said separately on Telegram that eight others were injured in the strike on Bila Tserkva.

Ukraine’s Air Force claimed on Telegram that the country’s air defenses shot down 146 out of 352 drones launched by Russia, as well as 12 out of 16 missiles fired during the overnight attack.

"The main direction of the attack is the city of Kyiv!" it added.

In a later statement, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed it carried out a group of strikes on enterprises of Ukraine's military-industrial complex in the Kyiv region, as well as the infrastructure of a military airfield and a mine and torpedo arsenal belonging to the Ukrainian Navy.
