Two people were killed and at least 21 others, including a policeman sustained serious injuries in an Improvised Explosive Device attack in India’s northeastern Assam state Monday, Indian police said.

The blast comes at a time when two-phased elections for the state's Legislative Assembly began in Assam.

It took place in front of a police station in Goalpara district, some 90 kilometers (56 miles) from the state capital, Guwahati.

Indian Congress party’s Vice President Rahul Gandhi was in the district to address an election rally ahead of the blast.

Assam’s top police official Pallab Bhattacharya told media that the banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) may be behind the blast.
