DAMASCUS/ GENEVA
Syrian foreign minister threatened Friday to withdraw from the so-called Geneva II peace talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the country if "serious discussions" do not begin by Saturday.
"We are serious and ready to have talks but we can not see the same seriousness from the other side. We are seeking a common ground for negotiations," Walid Moallem said to UN and Arab League Special Envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, according to Syria's state-run SANA news agency.
Moallem's threat angered the Syrian opposition.
An adviser to the opposition delegation in Geneva, Burhan Ghalioun said "The regime wants to quit negotiations and they are trying to throw the ball at us."
Ghalioun said Brahimi decided to hold separate talks with both sides. He refuted claims by the regime that Syrian opposition did not show up for talks.
