A delegation of nearly 40 Somali lawmakers met on Thursday with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and handed him a statement demanding his resignation.
"Our delegation of MPs was received by the president and we presented him with our official statement and letter," lawmaker Ahmed Abdullahi told Anadolu Agency in a phone interview.
Delegation members met Mohamud at his presidential residence in capital Mogadishu.
According to Abdullahi, the statement has been signed by 116 lawmakers.
The legislators argue that Mohamud has failed to deliver on promises to bring change to the troubled Horn of Africa nation.
They cite the deteriorating security situation and frequent killings by the militant Al-Shabaab group, along with alleged government corruption.
"We have also delivered a similar letter to the speaker of parliament Mohamed Osman Jawari," Abdullahi said.
The lawmakers have threatened to raise a motion of no confidence against both the president and the speaker.
In a statement emailed to AA, President Mohamud acknowledged receipt of the written statement, affirming his respect for the right of every citizen to freely express their opinion.
"I'm pleased that this indicates how far we have come in establishing and protecting people's rights through our state-building processes," he said.
President Mohamud has asked the legislators to follow correct legal procedures as laid down by the provincial constitution.
According to the constitution, a third of the parliaments 275 members are required to move an impeachment motion.
