Republican candidate Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who served as White House press secretary in the Trump administration, won election for governor in Arkansas on Tuesday.

Sanders defeated Democrat Chris Jones, who is a nuclear engineer, and has become the first female governor of the state, as called by the Associated Press.

She will succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

Millions of Americans headed to the polls in the country’s midterm elections Tuesday, with 35 Senate seats as well as all 435 seats in the House of Representatives up for grabs.

Most analysts are predicting that Republicans will gain control of the House, but the fate of the Senate remains a topic of intense speculation.

Several key races remain neck-and-neck in polls done close to Election Day.
