CAIRO
The pro-democracy National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy on Thursday called for a fresh week of demonstrations against last summer's ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi by the army.
In a statement, the alliance called on supporters to show support for and solidarity with "the struggle of university students, especially Al-Azhar University students."
Al-Azhar University has seen almost daily demonstrations – which have often turned violent – since Morsi's overthrow by the army last July.
Recurring clashes with security forces have left several students dead, scores injured and hundreds detained in recent months.
On Sunday, two Al-Azhar students were killed when security forces dispersed a protest to demand the release of colleagues arrested during earlier demonstrations.
The call for a new week of protests comes one day after a senior police officer was killed and five others injured in multiple blasts outside Cairo University.
Egypt has been dogged by instability since the army unseated Morsi, the country's first freely elected president, last August summer following massive protests against his administration.
Pro-democracy protesters have been staging almost daily rallies ever since.
