WASHINGTON
Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders Sunday have blamed Republican front-runner Donald Trump for inciting violence that rocked his rallies in Chicago and Kansas City.
The Democratic contenders’ comments came as a response to question at a town hall meeting at Ohio State University in Columbus televised by CNN.
Calling Trump "bigoted", Clinton claimed that the billionaire had perpetrated "political arson" by fueling divisions in the country.
"It is clear that Donald Trump is running a very cynical campaign pitting groups of Americans against one another. He is trafficking in hate and fear," the former Secretary of State said.
"He actually incites violence in the way he urges his audience on, talking about punching people, offering to pay legal bills," she added. "You don't make America great by tearing down everything that made America great".
Clinton’s rival, Vermont Senator Sanders, called Trump a "pathological liar" in response to his claim that those who caused violence at his Chicago rally were Sanders’ supporters.
"I hesitate to say this because I really don't like to disparage public officials, but Donald Trump is a pathological liar," Sanders said adding that people have the right to protest.
"Trump has to get on the TV and tell his supporters that violence in the political process in America is not acceptable, end of discussion," he added.
He slammed the Republican front-runner for vowing to pay the legal fees of a man charged with punching a protester at his rally.
Sanders noted that doing so was "inciting violence".
"I would hope Mr. Trump tones it down big time and tells his supporters that violence is not acceptable in the American political process," Sanders added.
Trump’s rallies in Chicago on Friday, and Kansas City on Saturday were interrupted with violence and disruption. Trump was forced to cancel his rally at Chicago on Friday night.
