Yemen: '15 civilians killed in Saudi-led airstrikes'

SANAA, Yemen

Fifteen civilians were killed in Saudi Arabia-led coalition airstrikes in Yemen’s Zamar province on Wednesday, hospital sources and local residents said Thursday.

The incident took place in the province’s Sanaban town.

A local resident Ahmed alleged that coalition forces had targeted a house where three couples were holding their wedding ceremonies, adding that missiles dropped when three grooms reached there.

A Zamar State Hospital official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that four bodies were brought to their medical facility.

The official added that 11 more women died in the incident; however, the women’s bodies were not brought to the hospital because of the local community’s reluctance.

The Yemeni government and Saudi-led coalition forces have so far not commented on the incident.

Fractious Yemen has remained in turmoil since last September, when Houthi militants overran the capital Sanaa from which they have sought to extend their influence to other parts of the country.

On March 25, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies began an extensive air campaign targeting Houthi positions across the country.

Riyadh says its campaign comes in response to appeals by Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi for military intervention against the Houthis.

The Houthis, however, denounce the offensive as unwarranted “Saudi-American aggression” against Yemen.
