US reviewing 'a number of people' to lead Iran after war ends, White House says White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt

WASHINGTON

The Trump administration is reviewing several names it believes could potentially lead Iran after the end of the US-Israeli war on that country, the White House said Friday.

"There's a number of people that our intelligence agencies in the United States government are looking at, but I won't get any further," spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told reporters at the White House.

Trump rejected any negotiated end to the conflict short of Iran's "unconditional surrender," maintaining he must have a role in deciding who will be Tehran's next leader.

Regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched a large-scale attack Saturday on Iran, killing more than 1,000 people, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, over 150 schoolgirls and senior military officials.

Iran has retaliated with sweeping barrages that have targeted US bases, diplomatic facilities and military personnel across the region, as well as multiple Israeli cities. At least six US service members have been killed.

Iran's drone and missile attacks have continued to escalate, with reports indicating that Tehran fired missiles laden with cluster munitions at Tel Aviv late Thursday.
