Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa discussed developments in Syria and the wider region during a Friday phone call with Masoud Barzani, the leader of northern Iraq’s Kurdistan Democratic Party.

According to a statement by the Syrian Presidency, the two reviewed recent developments in Syria and regional issues, stressing the importance of enhancing stability and mutual cooperation.

During the call, Sharaa stressed that “Kurds are an integral and essential component of Syrian society,” reaffirming the state’s full commitment to guaranteeing their national, political, and civil rights on an equal footing with all Syrians, without discrimination.

Barzani welcomed the president’s remarks, expressing appreciation for the vision and voicing support for Syrians’ aspirations to build an inclusive state for all its citizens, the statement said.

On Thursday, the Syrian government said in a separate statement that Kurds are a “fundamental and authentic component” of the Syrian people.

The government has intensified efforts to maintain security across the country since the ouster of the Bashar Assad regime in December 2024, after 24 years in power.
