GENEVA
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Austria said on Thursday that the targeted killing of media workers in Gaza has long been a terrifying reality.
The group demanded immediate protection for reporters and a peaceful solution that ensured press freedom.
“For Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Austria, the war in Gaza marks an unprecedented breach of civilization that leaves the world in shock,” it said in a statement.
The secretary general of RSF Austria added: “While the mechanisms of the international community for lasting conflict resolution are largely failing, the first additional protocol to the 1977 Geneva Convention, which guarantees special protection for journalists in war and conflict zones, is also being increasingly disregarded.”
The RSF stressed that “it is imperative that the work of the media in war zones be recognized by all parties to the conflict as a valuable contribution to democracy, justice, and lasting peace.”
The group also underlined the importance of creating prospects for Gaza’s future beyond suffering and destruction.
“It is important to promote a new generation of journalists who, beyond the image of war, also highlight cultural developments, people's everyday lives, and new confidence,” it said.
The RSF noted that journalism can open space for diverse perspectives and help overcome stereotypical conflict narratives.
“Freedom of the press is an indispensable foundation. Especially in an area torn by war and violence such as Gaza, it must be ensured and developed vigorously—not least in order to open up paths to justice and peace,” it concluded.
