Prominent scholar's daughter remanded in Egypt again

CAIRO

Egyptian prosecutors on Thursday remanded the daughter of prominent Muslim scholar Yusuf al-Qaradawi in custody for 15 days pending further investigation into new charges against her, according to her lawyer.

Ola al-Qaradawi, 55, was taken into custody only a few hours after her release in a previous case.

Her lawyer Ahmed Madi told reporters that she faces charges of "joining a terrorist group".

Protesting against the decision, the lawyer said, his client was staging a hunger strike.

On Sunday, Ola's family demanded her release after she completed two years in prison, the maximum period of remand.

In June 2017, Egyptian authorities arrested Qaradawi along with her husband from their home. She was later accused of having links to the Muslim Brotherhood, a group outlawed in Egypt.

In October last year, the al-Qaradawi family said that Ola’s health had deteriorated while in detention.

Egyptian-born Yusuf al-Qaradawi is revered by supporters as the spiritual leader of Muslim Brotherhood.
