Lebanon says over 822,000 people displaced by Israeli attacks

BEIRUT, Lebanon / ISTANBUL

Lebanese authorities said Thursday that more than 822,000 people have been displaced by Israeli attacks on the country since March 2.

In a statement, the Lebanon Disaster Risk Management Unit said that 822,600 people have been registered as displaced, while 128,800 others are currently staying in shelters.

The unit added that 33,200 displaced families are housed in shelter centers across the country.

According to the statement, 596 shelter centers have been opened to accommodate those forced to flee their homes by the Israeli assaults.

On March 2, Lebanese group Hezbollah began attacking Israeli military sites in response to repeated Israeli attacks on Lebanon and the killing of Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a US-Israeli strike.

Israel retaliated by launching a military campaign on Lebanon, carrying out airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs and areas in the south and east of the country, and on March 3 began a limited ground incursion in southern Lebanon.

According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, the attacks have resulted in 687 deaths, including 98 children, and 1,774 injuries.
