Jordan on Monday condemned an Israeli law imposing the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, saying the measure violates international law and international humanitarian law.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ambassador Fouad Majali said Jordan rejects the legislation, describing it as a “racist, discriminatory and illegitimate” law.

He said the measure violates international legal principles that prohibit an occupying power from imposing its authority over occupied territory through unilateral legislation.

Majali said the law forms part of a systematic Israeli policy targeting the Palestinian people and their inalienable rights, including the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on Palestinian territory under a two-state solution.

He called on the international community to take immediate action to prevent Israel from implementing the law and to stop what he described as illegal Israeli legislation and unilateral measures targeting the Palestinian people and their presence on their land.

Earlier Monday, Israel’s Knesset approved the law in its second and third readings by 62 votes to 48, according to Israeli media.

The legislation allows Israeli courts to impose the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voted in favor of the law.
