JERUSALEM / ISTANBUL

The Israeli army claimed on Thursday to have assassinated a Hamas commander in Gaza City, as Israel continued its destructive onslaught on the Palestinian enclave.

A military statement said that Haitham Razek Khalil was killed, along with other Hamas members, in a “precise strike” in Gaza City on Wednesday.

The army claimed that Khalil was the commander of what it called Hamas’ Shujaiya Battalion and was responsible for a spate of attacks against Israeli forces in Gaza.

There was no immediate confirmation from Hamas on the Israeli claim.

The Israeli army has continued a deadly assault on Gaza since March 18, killing more than 1,500 victims, injuring over 3,800 others, and shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that took hold in January.

More than 50,800 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in a brutal Israeli onslaught since October 2023, most of them women and children.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
