Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government premier, US envoy discuss regional situation
Masrour Barzani, Tom Barrack condemn attacks targeting Kurdish Region and US Embassy in Baghdad during phone call
ISTANBUL
Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani discussed regional developments with US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack during a phone call on Saturday, according to a statement issued by KRG.
During the call, both sides reviewed the general situation in the Kurdish Region, Iraq, and the broader region.
Barzani and Barrack condemned attacks that targeted the Kurdish Region and the US Embassy in Baghdad.
Both sides also stressed the importance of maintaining continued coordination and communication.
The US Embassy in Baghdad came under a rocket attack early Saturday, local media reported, citing a security source.
Following the incident, the US Embassy in the Iraqi capital urged American citizens in Iraq to leave the country “immediately” due to escalating security threats.
The embassy said in a statement that “Iran-aligned terrorist militias” have encouraged and carried out attacks against US citizens and US-linked targets across Iraq, including in the Kurdish Regional Government.
The statement said the militias have repeatedly attacked the International Zone in central Baghdad, which remains closed with limited exceptions.
Regional tensions have flared since Israel and the US launched joint attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,200 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries, which it says are targeting “US military assets.”
