Iran says proposals conveyed to US as new round of talks starts in Geneva

TEHRAN, Iran

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Thursday that Tehran has conveyed its views and proposals to the American side through the Omani mediators.

Speaking to the state broadcaster from Geneva, where he is accompanying the Iranian delegation to a new round of indirect talks with Washington, Baghaei said the third round of negotiations began with a meeting between the foreign ministers of Iran and Oman late Wednesday.

Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will also join the course of the talks, he said.

The spokesman said part of the Iranian delegation’s work in this round will be to monitor statements made by the American side, adding that positions of the two sides should be raised in the negotiation room, not in the media.

He said the Iranian delegation has entered the new round of negotiations with “full preparedness,” accompanied by experts in all relevant fields, “to secure the country’s national interests.”

Baghaei said the focus of the negotiations is the nuclear issue, both in the area of sanctions relief and nuclear-related matters.

The third and latest round of indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States is being held in Geneva under Omani mediation.

Like the previous rounds held in Muscat and Geneva, respectively, the Iranian delegation is led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the American delegation is led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Araghchi, accompanied by a delegation that includes his deputy for political affairs, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, and a team of nuclear, legal and economic experts, arrived in the Swiss city on Wednesday evening.

Soon after his arrival, the top diplomat met with his Omani counterpart, Badr Al-Busaidi, to discuss the contours of the talks and the draft proposal to be submitted to the American side -- effectively setting in motion the process of the latest round of talks.

A reporter with the state-run news agency IRNA, who is accompanying the Iranian delegation to Geneva, said the draft proposal was submitted to the American side through Omani mediators.

He said the draft proposal is expected to serve as a “practical test to assess the seriousness of the United States” as talks resume amid heightened tensions.

Araghchi emphasised that the success of the negotiations requires “seriousness from the other side” and refraining from “contradictory behaviour and positions.”

The draft proposal is based on guiding principles agreed upon by the two sides in the previous round of negotiations, Iranian media said.

According to media reports, Witkoff also met the Omani foreign minister following his arrival in Geneva on Thursday morning to exchange notes and discuss the Iranian draft.
