Iran’s top security official to visit Oman ahead of next round of nuclear talks with US
Talks between Iran, US resumed in Muscat on Friday after around 8-month suspension
TEHRAN, Iran
Iran’s top security official is set to visit Muscat on Tuesday, just days after the resumption of nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington under Omani mediation, the state news agency IRNA reported on Monday.
Ali Larijani, who heads Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, will meet with senior Omani officials to discuss the latest regional and international developments, as well as bilateral cooperation, the report said.
The visit takes on added significance as Iran and the US prepare for the next round of negotiations, which resumed in Muscat on Friday after nearly eight months of suspension.
The indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington were halted following the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June last year, during which the US targeted three key Iranian nuclear sites.
While Iranian media have not specified the agenda of Larijani’s visit, sources said he is expected to discuss the contours of the next round of talks with the Omani mediators.
The timing and venue of the next round of talks have not yet been confirmed. Sources say Larijani is also expected to discuss and determine these details with the Omani officials.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking at an event in Tehran on Monday, said the timing and venue “will be determined through consultations conducted by Oman.”
So far, the assessment of the latest round of negotiations between Tehran and Washington has been positive from both sides, with a degree of caution.
On Friday, Araghchi called the latest round of negotiations with the US a “good start,” and noted that they “can also have a good continuation,” but stressed that this depends on the other side.
US President Donald Trump also described the talks as “very good,” but reaffirmed that the US military buildup in the region will continue should Iran fail to reach a deal.
On Monday morning, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf said Araghchi and top military commander Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi attended a closed-door parliamentary session during which the ongoing nuclear talks and US threats were discussed, according to media reports.
Following the session, Ghalibaf said Iran is pursuing diplomacy while also strengthening its defenses against “the adversaries.”
Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on Iranians to participate in Wednesday’s nationwide rallies marking the 47th anniversary of the 1979 revolution.
In a televised speech, Khamenei said it will “cause the enemy to retreat from coveting Iran and its national interests,” urging people to “frustrate the enemy by showing your determination and steadfastness.”
The supreme leader said Iran “achieved a great victory” by saving the country from “foreign interference,” and over the years has “stood firm against their continuous efforts to restore the previous state,” alluding to the US.
